While Durban is widely known for its sunny weather, beautiful beaches, irresistible vacation atmosphere and fun- it is also a great place to explore and go for a hike. If you are a Durbanite and you have been wondering which hiking spots to visit, here are some hiking trail destinations to consider:

Giba Gorge Nature Reserve- This beautiful trail is located at 110 Stockville Road, Tollgate, Pinetown. Although this nature reserve is well known for its mountain biking, it does host a maze of running trails- if you are the type of person who enjoys going for a run. The amazing serenity which is accompanied by waterfalls is the best part, if you are a fan of breathtaking views. Giba Gorge has many well-maintained amenities including a camping site with showers, bathrooms, a horse-riding trail and a first aid station.

Paradise Valley Nature Reserve- Paradise valley is located at 10 Oxford Road, Pinetown and is also known for its four trails with short distances. While the four trails are not the longest as compared to some trails, they do vary in difficulty which makes it a fun experience if you like a challenge. This trail offers hikers the chance to combine trails, which gives you a chance to come across attractions including unique views and spectacular scenery.

Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve- Found in Hawaan, Blackburn in the centre of Umhlanga- this trail is perfect for new hikers and runners with children. This trail offers a historic background of the reserve, so if you’re one for learning about history- this might be the trail for you. Umhlanga Lagoon is a combination of wetlands, coastal and forest environments, making it a unique environment accompanied by a beach for your relaxation after your hike.

Burman Bush Nature Reserve- This small trail is found at Burman Dr, Morningside. It has the total number of three trails and is a great place for a quick trail run or slow-paced walk, after a stressful day. Burman Bush offers wonderful floral selection and birdlife that makes the trail a great place to explore. If you are a fan of primate inhabitants and nature all in one, then this place is the one for you.

Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve- This conservation hotspot between the sea and Umgeni River is located Riverside Road, Prospect Hall. It is the perfect spot for both hiking and trail runs, as it also contains a variety of natural environments including swamp marsh, beach sand, and tropical looking mangroves. The natural beauty of the Beachwood Mangroves is perfect for photographs, as you also get the experience to discover strange creatures.

Ballito North to Salt Rock- Situated in Hotel Road, Salt Rock, Dolphin Coast, this place is a great place for a hike because you are able to create your own route to make things fun. The walk from Salt Rock Caravan Park to Ballito North is interesting because it’s easy to stop along the route for a quick swim at one of the tidal pools. The best part about this trail is that the elevation is mostly flat, which means it can also accommodate children.

Virginia Bush Nature Reserve- This trail is located at Adelaide Tambo Dr, Durban North which is quite close to the busy streets. Virginia Bush is perfect for trail running, hiking, and bird-watching because although it’s near the streets, the traffic and noise disappears as you enter the trail. One thing about this trail is that it is dog-friendly, so you can bring your dog along for a long walk as well.
