Life is extremely stressful especially in the times we find ourselves now. However there are ways to reduce your stress levels which won’t cost you anything, all that is required is a bit of your time … time to learn how to meditate in order to feel calmer, happier and stress free. Meditation is a simple practice that has been used for thousands of years to help with overall health.
Here are a few tips to help you find some peace and harmony, even if you have never meditated before these tips should help.
- It is best to meditate first thing in the morning as most people run out time during the day but if the morning is not going to work for you, meditate when it is convenient for you. The beauty of meditation is that it can be done anywhere and anytime of day.
- Find a quiet place to sit comfortably in (you can sit in any position you like that is comfortable). As a beginner start by sitting for 2 minutes a day for a week. Don’t worry about the how, just start. Most people worry about where to sit, what to sit on, how to breath and then never get started. Just start by sitting comfortably
- Close your eyes and sit quietly, your thoughts will come and go
- Start with a few deep breaths, this should help you start to relax, then as you begin your meditation your breathing should return to normal.
- When you first start meditating it is helpful to count your breath in for a count of 4 and out for a count of 4.
- Understand that your mind will wander but as it does just bring your focus back to your breath. Meditation is about clearing the mind and as you keep practicing you will find your mind wandering less
- Keep a gentle smile on your face, this helps to keep you peaceful and relaxed
- When your two minutes are finished slowly open your eyes and adjust to your surroundings, smile and be grateful that you made time for yourself
- You can use meditation music to help set the mood and there are many apps available that can assist you
It may also be helpful to diffuse some essential oils whilst meditating to help set the mood, essential oils with lovely aromas can enhance your meditation experience
