Ms. Peta Gaye McCalla, a mother to two young adults, a “Faithprenur” owner of Quintessential Lifestyle, and the author of “Journey: My Life behind the Chair.” Peta is a Jamaican by birth but immigrated to America, where she realized her dream as a professional hairstylist and hair educator.
Although she did not have it all when growing up, it did not stop her from dreaming and wanting to have a better life for her and her children. Her situation taught her humility and to be grateful.
“I am proud to say my struggles have given me a voice to express my true self in finding eternal love and happiness,” she added.
Growing up with limited resources and knowledge kept me naive. Living in Jamaica and coming to the USA, I was very sheltered but very resourceful. Not having much when growing up made me humble and grateful.
Tell me about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.
The most memorable was when I landed the cover of Short Cut Magazine. It was at this point that I realized I have talent. I then started to write for the magazine as well in a section called ‘Salon Talk.’ Every time I see my work, I am still amazed. I am still in disbelief. It is these little moments that bring me joy!
What is a life-defining change/moment that shaped you into the person you are today
My divorce, definitely when I was brave enough to walk away from the marriage. I still can not believe I gave up everything. I left my comfort place to be uncomfortable. The price I paid was for the new me.
Tell us about your book and what inspired you to write it?
I wanted to share the unspoken, so many women have this mask of not spilling their “tea.” I wanted to heal and move on with hopes to help other women, like myself, who believe they are the only ones. I know that women have more in common than not.
What is your life philosophy, and where does it come from?
My life philosophy is, it is not where or how you start – start and complete it. I never wanted to live life with unfinished business. I am a finisher!
What are your future aspirations?
I hope to make my life story a movie adding more details to this journey. There is so much to say I wanted to keep my readers hungry for more. Mission accomplished quick reading with questions and encouragement.
If you were to turn back the hands of time, what is the one thing you would do differently and why?
I would have invested more into my career, believing in myself and my talents. I did not know my potential. Many times I settled because of my insecurities, especially not completing college or having a mentor.
What is your advice to someone who is considering immigrating?
My advice is, it is not an easy road. It is about being able to reinvent and adapting to a lifestyle without quitting one’s dreams.
If you had superpowers, what is the one thing you can change?
I wish I can give everyone FAITH. It is my superpower. Faith without works is dead!
